Comme ses contemporains en France, il n&rsquo;adh\u00e9rera jamais aux id\u00e9es de Newton. Certains en mesurent cependant la port\u00e9e, notamment Clairaut, La Condamine et Maupertuis, qui publie en 1732 un opuscule o\u00f9 il pr\u00f4ne la th\u00e9orie de la gravitation. Dans la pol\u00e9mique qui suit, La Caille, dont l\u2019influence est grande, se range du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des newtoniens dont les id\u00e9es sont vite accept\u00e9es dans le monde scientifique.
